Most used EV buyers never think about this. But when a connected EV changes hands without the previous owner de-linking their account, that previous owner retains remote access to the vehicle its location, its charge level, and in many cases its locks and charging controls.
What the app can access
Depending on the manufacturer and model, a linked app account can show vehicle location in real time, current state of charge and estimated range, charging history and settings, lock and unlock status, and in some cases allow remote locking, unlocking, or charge session management.
On vehicles with remote climate control, the previous owner may also be able to start heating or cooling remotely.
Why it does not de-link automatically
The manufacturer account is linked to the user, not the transaction. When a vehicle is sold, no automatic notification reaches the manufacturer. The previous owner's account remains active unless they actively remove the vehicle.
Many simply forget or never knew the vehicle would remain visible on their app after sale.
How to resolve it
Ask the seller before or at the point of sale to remove the vehicle from their manufacturer account.
This is done through the app settings or the manufacturer's web portal: find the vehicle in the account and select remove, de-register, or equivalent. Ask for written confirmation by message or email.
After taking possession, create your own account and register the vehicle to it.
On most platforms, the new owner registration process includes a step that confirms and completes the de-link from previous accounts, but confirm this rather than assuming.
If the seller cannot or will not help
Contact the manufacturer's customer support with proof of ownership the V5C/2 or dealer receipt. Most manufacturers have a process for handling ownership transfers and can confirm and reset account access on production of ownership documentation.
