How far do you drive on a typical day?
Most UK drivers cover under 30 miles daily. Almost every used EV handles this comfortably on a single charge. The journeys that require careful thought are not average days they are your longest regular days. Map those specifically.
Where will you charge?
Off-street parking with a home wall charger is the ideal scenario. Street parking is workable if reliable public charging exists nearby but requires honest research before buying, not after. Never buy assuming you will sort charging out later.
What do your longer journeys look like?
Occasional long trips are manageable with route planning. Regular high mileage days with critical time pressure require more careful vehicle selection and a realistic assessment of charging stop implications.
What is your total budget including all costs?
Purchase price is one figure. Home charger installation, EV rated tyres, insurance, and potentially an extended warranty are all part of the real cost picture. Account for all of them before comparing to a petrol alternative.
When a used EV works well
Predictable daily distances under 80 miles. Off-street parking or reliable local public charging. Occasional longer trips where a planned charging stop is acceptable. Budget that accounts for the full cost picture.
When it may not be right yet
Regular 150 plus mile days where time is critical. No charging solution available at home or nearby. Very high annual mileage with budget sensitivity to unexpected costs. Need for significant towing capability.
