The purchase price is agreed. The keys are yours. But the ownership transfer on a used EV is not finished until several steps specific to electric vehicles are completed. Here is the complete list.
Standard steps
V5C transfer completed at point of sale, DVLA notified. Insurance confirmed in place before first drive. V5C in your name verified at gov.uk a few weeks after purchase.
EV-specific steps
Manufacturer app de-link the previous owner must remove the vehicle from their account. Until they do, they retain remote access.
Ask for written confirmation it has been done, then register the vehicle to your own account.
Battery warranty transfer, not automatic on all manufacturers. Contact the manufacturer with your VIN and confirm the warranty is active in your name in writing.
Outstanding recalls, book any open recalls at an authorised dealer immediately. Recall repairs are free. Register for future recall notifications with the manufacturer.
Software update, check the current software version and update if needed. Some vehicles require a dealer visit for this.
Battery lease transfer, if applicable, confirm with Mobilize Financial Services or Nissan Finance in writing that the lease is now in your name.
First week
Set up home charging schedule. Configure manufacturer app notifications. Check tyre pressures against manufacturer specification.
Read the relevant sections of the owner's manual. Complete a familiarisation drive and note anything unexpected.
